Services

What the Stark County Health Department actually handles

Nursing and vaccines

Routine childhood and adult vaccines, TB screening, STI testing, home-visiting programs, safe infant sleep services, naloxone and other public-health nursing programs.

Vital statistics

Certified Ohio birth certificates and death certificate services, including in-person kiosk ordering and online ordering through the county’s contracted vendor.

Environmental Health

Septic systems, private wells, property-transfer evaluations, food service inspections, complaints and other environmental-health programs.

WIC

Nutrition support for eligible pregnant and breastfeeding women, postpartum participants, infants and children under age five within the correct service jurisdiction.

Food protection

Restaurants, retail food establishments, caterers, mobile vendors, temporary food operations, complaints, plan reviews and foodborne illness investigations.

Community harm reduction

The county HealthMobile provides overdose education, naloxone distribution and harm-reduction services at community locations.

Vaccination clinics

Vaccines, school shots and immunization records

Stark County Nursing Services lists vaccination clinics from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM daily. Call 330-493-9928 to schedule or confirm current vaccine availability.

Bring these items

Bring photo ID, insurance card and current immunization records. A parent or guardian must accompany children age 17 or younger.

Legal guardians

A legal guardian should bring court documentation showing guardianship. This is easy to miss when the adult accompanying a child is not the parent.

Need a shot record?

The county FAQ says Nursing Services clerks can print an immunization record when the client has an ID.

Vaccines for Children program

Stark County participates in the federal Vaccines for Children program. The official county page lists an administration charge of $21 per VFC vaccine.

A child must be age 18 or younger and meet at least one qualifying category: Medicaid eligible, uninsured, American Indian or Alaska Native, or underinsured.

Travel-vaccine exception Stark County’s FAQ says the county department does not provide international travel vaccines such as typhoid or yellow fever. It directs residents to Canton City Public Health or Summit County Public Health for those vaccines.
Current measles call-ahead guidance The county homepage asks anyone who has been exposed to measles, or who may have measles symptoms, to call before coming in for services. This helps staff plan a safer arrival route and reduce exposure to other visitors.
Nursing details

TB screening, STI testing and other nursing services

The Health Department’s FAQ lists more than vaccines on the second floor. Services include STI testing, TB screening, home visiting, diapers, naloxone, safe infant sleep education and portable cribs.

TB screenings

Official guidance lists TB screening on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM for a $20 fee. The test is read 48 hours later.

Appointments vs walk-ins

The county FAQ says appointments are helpful but not required for most Nursing Services. It specifically identifies TB screening, STI testing and immunizations as services with walk-in availability. WIC appointments, however, must be scheduled.

Insurance and sliding-fee help The Nursing Services page says the department accepts Ohio Medicaid plans and most private insurance plans and offers a sliding fee scale with supporting documentation. Call before your visit to confirm your specific plan and expected cost.
Birth & death certificates

How to get an Ohio birth or death certificate through Stark County

The current county Vital Statistics pages make records easier than many older Stark County directory pages suggest. Stark County states that it has access to Ohio birth records, and beginning November 19, 2025, certified death certificates became statewide rather than limited by local jurisdiction.

Decide whether you need a birth or death certificate

These are certified vital records. Hospital medical charts, physician notes and lab results come from the healthcare provider, not the Health Department certificate desk.

Choose in-person or online ordering

The county offers in-person ordering at its lobby kiosk and online ordering through Permitium LLC, its contracted online service provider.

Check the current fee

The official pages list an in-person certified birth or death certificate at $25. Permitium adds a separate $4 convenience fee, and shipping charges may also apply.

Check special death-certificate access rules

Ohio limits who can obtain a death certificate containing the deceased person’s Social Security number during the restricted period. Proof of qualification may be required.

Review the certificate before leaving

The county states that sales are final and it does not issue refunds. If a correctable error is found on a certificate purchased from Stark County, the office may correct and replace it within six months under its published exchange policy.

Very old records The county death-record page notes that some records before 1908 may be available through the Stark County District Library. Older birth-registration questions may also involve Probate Court rather than today’s Health Department system.
WIC routing

Which WIC office should Stark County families call?

WIC routing depends on where you live. Do not assume every Stark County address belongs to the county WIC office.

Where you live WIC office Phone What to know
Canton city Canton City Public Health 330-489-3326 Use the city WIC program, not Stark County WIC.
Alliance city Alliance City Health Department 330-821-3929 Schedule with the Alliance WIC route.
Massillon city Massillon City Health Department 330-830-1715 Schedule through Massillon.
Elsewhere in Stark County Stark County Health Department 330-493-9918 appointment routing County contact page also lists 330-493-9917 as its WIC phone.
Who may qualify? The county describes WIC as serving income-eligible pregnant and breastfeeding women, women who recently had a baby, infants and children through age four / until age five who meet program requirements. All WIC appointments must be scheduled.
Septic & wells

Septic permits, property transfers and well requests

If you are buying land, adding onto a house, replacing a failing system or selling a property on septic, start with Environmental Health before work begins. A building or real-estate deadline does not replace the county’s permit and inspection process.

New construction

The county publishes a new-construction checklist, septic application, soil-consultant information, system-designer resources and registered-installer information.

Existing system / replacement

Environmental Health publishes replacement-system procedures, septic abandonment guidance, installer lists and service-provider information.

Property transfer

The county has property-transfer sewage evaluation forms as well as water-system evaluation and water-test request forms.

Before submitting an environmental form

Have the exact property address ready

Use the actual parcel/site information rather than only saying the property is in Canton, North Canton or another nearby community.

Choose the correct application

New construction, replacement, addition evaluation, property transfer and water-well requests use different forms and may have different review requirements.

Do not assume an online payment speeds up the inspection

The county explicitly says online submissions are processed in the order received together with in-person submissions and do not expedite scheduling.

Save the final permit and inspection paperwork

Keep records with your property documents. They can matter later for additions, refinancing, property transfer, repairs or a future system replacement.

Food safety

Restaurant inspections, food complaints and new food businesses

Stark County Environmental Health regulates restaurants, caterers, institutions, retail food markets, mobile vendors and temporary or seasonal food operations within its jurisdiction. It also investigates food complaints and suspected foodborne illness and reviews plans for new or remodeled food businesses.

Opening or remodeling

Contact Food Protection before construction or opening. Plan review can affect sinks, equipment, plumbing, layout and your inspection timeline.

Food complaint

Have the business name, location, visit date, what you observed and any illness details ready. Medical emergencies still require appropriate medical care.

Inspection reports

The county warns that a single inspection is a snapshot of conditions on that day and should not automatically be treated as a long-term rating of the establishment.

2026 inspection search change Due to a software update, Stark County currently provides one inspection-report access point for inspections before March 13, 2026 and another for inspections conducted on or after March 13, 2026. If you cannot find a recent inspection, make sure you are searching the correct system.
Community services

HealthMobile, naloxone and harm-reduction help

The Stark County HealthMobile is a 30-foot mobile unit providing overdose education, naloxone distribution and harm-reduction services at community locations.

The county invites residents to text CARE to 1-855-640-8285 for HealthMobile location updates. This is useful if getting to the Whipple Avenue office is difficult or if you are looking specifically for overdose-prevention resources.

Overdose emergency If someone is unconscious, not breathing normally or may be experiencing an overdose, call 911 immediately. Community outreach schedules are not emergency-response services.
