Flint public-health help: the right clinic, program and phone number first

Genesee County Health Department services are now centered in the renovated County Administration Building at 324 S. Saginaw Street in downtown Flint. If you remember the old McCree Building or Burton Health Department location, that is important: several county programs moved in 2025.

The quickest route depends on what you need. Immunizations, WIC, sexual health, environmental permits and vital records all use different contacts—and birth or death certificates actually belong to the County Clerk rather than the Health Department.

Quick answer

What does the Genesee County Health Department do?

Genesee County Health Department is the local public-health agency serving Flint and communities throughout Genesee County, Michigan. Its work includes immunizations, WIC nutrition services, sexual and reproductive health, communicable-disease prevention, maternal and infant programs, hearing and vision screening, emergency preparedness and Environmental Health services.

For people and families

Use GCHD for vaccinations, WIC, family planning, STI/HIV services, hearing and vision screening, maternal/infant support and local disease-prevention programs.

For property owners

Environmental Health handles private wells, onsite sewage/septic work and related water/environmental permit issues.

For businesses

Environmental Health also works with regulated food and environmental programs. Call before construction, opening or changing a regulated operation.

Do not confuse GCHD with MDHHS Genesee County Health Department is the local public-health department. Michigan Department of Health and Human Services handles major statewide programs such as Medicaid policy, MI Bridges benefits, statewide vital records and other state services. The offices are related through public-health systems but they are not the same agency.

2026 location update

Where is the Genesee County Health Department now?

The main department is now in the Genesee County Administration Building at 324 S. Saginaw Street, Flint, MI 48502. The 2025 relocation matters because older PDFs, local directories and search results can still show 630 S. Saginaw Street or the former Burton clinic at G-3373 S. Saginaw Street.

Main department

324 S. Saginaw Street, Flint. Current local-public-health directory information lists 810-257-3612 and general hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Environmental Health

Current 2025 permit instructions place Environmental Health on the sixth floor / Suite 6 at 324 S. Saginaw Street.

Downtown Flint WIC

Michigan’s WIC directory lists the Downtown Flint WIC clinic at 324 S. Saginaw Street, Suite 5, with phone 810-237-4537.

Old-address warning Some legitimate county PDFs were created before the August 2025 move and still display the former McCree or Burton addresses. Use the current county page or call the program before mailing an application or driving to an older address.
Vaccines

Immunizations, school shots and vaccine-waiver appointments

GCHD provides childhood and adult immunization services. Current county and community-health materials direct patients to 810-237-4540 for appointments, vaccine questions and school vaccination-waiver help.

Bring your shot record

Bring every immunization record you can find. County consent materials specifically include a process for requesting or picking up a child’s vaccination record.

School requirements

Genesee County residents and families with children attending county schools can contact GCHD for required immunizations and waiver counseling.

Cost can vary

County resource materials describe insurance billing and a sliding-fee approach in some circumstances. Confirm coverage and current charges before the appointment.

Sexual health

STI testing, HIV testing, PrEP and family planning

CDC lists testing for HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and other STI-related services. Rapid HIV testing is also listed.

Prevention and treatment

Current CDC listings include STI treatment, PrEP, HIV prevention/counseling, condom distribution and selected hepatitis/HPV/mpox vaccination services.

Payment varies

The federal clinic listing shows a mix of free services, insurance, Medicaid/Medicare and sliding-scale options. Ask the clinic what applies to your visit before assuming a service is free.

Privacy and urgent symptoms Call the program for confidential-service questions. A county clinic is not an emergency room. Severe bleeding, trouble breathing, loss of consciousness or another immediate medical emergency should go to 911 or emergency medical care.
Children & families

Healthy Start, hearing and vision, and maternal-child support

GCHD’s work is broader than vaccines and permits. County programs also support pregnancy, infants, children and families through public-health education, screening and care coordination.

Healthy Start

Genesee County’s Healthy Start Initiative remains funded for the April 2026-March 2027 period. County documents describe home visiting, case management, care coordination and community-resource connections for women and infants.

Hearing & vision

County service materials list hearing and vision screening for children age three and older. Call 810-257-3193 for current times and locations.

Community health support

GCHD also works on maternal-child health, health education, communicable-disease prevention and referrals to local community resources.

Environmental Health

Well permits, septic systems, food safety and water testing

For property owners, builders and many regulated businesses, the most useful number on this page may be 810-257-3603. Current Genesee County permit documents place Environmental Health at 324 S. Saginaw Street, Suite 6.

Private well permits

Current posted well instructions require a completed permit application and scaled site plan. The Health Department says applications must be submitted at least three working days before planned construction and instructs applicants to call MISS DIG 811 before work begins.

Current posted fee: $200.

Type III public non-community well

Current posted fee: $300.

Well permit life

Current instructions state that well permits are valid for 2 years from issuance.

Water test before approval After drilling, the county requires a negative bacteria result before final well approval. Current instructions list a $20 county laboratory charge when using the GCHD lab, with water samples accepted Monday-Thursday during the posted sample window.

Septic / onsite sewage permits

For vacant land, the current county instructions say the parcel needs a street address before a perc test can be completed. Applicants also need a legal description, application and site-plan information. Workloads can mean a several-week wait for a perc appointment.

Current posted septic item Residential Commercial / other Important rule
Vacant-land perc test $220 $280 commercial Perc test is currently stated as valid for 5 years.
Install permit after perc $220 $280 commercial Permit is currently stated as valid for 1 year.

Food and regulated facilities

Environmental Health also works with food-service and other regulated environmental programs. If you are opening, remodeling or changing a food operation, contact Environmental Health before construction or equipment installation so you can identify plan-review, licensing and inspection requirements.

Records routing

Birth and death certificates do not come from the Health Department

This is an easy Flint-area mix-up. The Health Department handles public-health programs, but Genesee County’s official birth, death and marriage vital records are managed by the Genesee County Clerk Vital Records Division.

Birth certificate

Use the Genesee County Clerk for a certified Genesee County birth record. Current county materials list Vital Records at 810-257-3225.

Death certificate

Deaths recorded in Genesee County are also handled through County Clerk Vital Records rather than the Health Department clinic.

Immunization record

That is different from a birth record. For local vaccine-record questions, contact GCHD Immunizations at 810-237-4540.

Address transition caution Older Genesee County Clerk forms can show former county-building addresses. Current county directories now place Clerk/Register functions at 324 S. Saginaw Street. Call 810-257-3225 before mailing a vital-record request using an old printed form.
Before you visit

WIC: ask WIC what identity, residency, income/program and pregnancy/child documentation applies to your appointment.
