Wichita public health help: clinics, WIC, vaccines, testing and records routing
Sedgwick County Health Department services are spread across three Wichita locations. If you need a vaccine, WIC appointment, STI test, TB treatment, dental care or a medical record, the right address depends on the service.
The local shortcut is simple: West Central handles most clinical services, East 9th handles administration and several family/public-health programs, and South Clifton is a WIC-only clinic. Calling the right line before leaving home can save a cross-town trip.
What Sedgwick County public health services actually cover
Sedgwick County Health Department is the county public-health agency serving Wichita and the rest of Sedgwick County. Its programs include vaccinations, family planning, pregnancy testing, STI/HIV testing and care, tuberculosis services, WIC, children’s dental care, Healthy Babies, health screenings, disease reporting, emergency preparedness and medical-record support.
Vaccines, health screenings, family planning, pregnancy testing, well-woman services and STI/HIV testing are centered at 2716 W. Central Ave.
Administration, WIC, children’s dental, Healthy Babies, TB treatment, epidemiology, emergency preparedness and several community programs operate here.
The South Clifton location is currently listed as WIC-only. It does not provide vaccines or the other West Central clinical services.
Sedgwick County Health Department locations and service differences
The county’s current location page makes one point especially clear: not every service is available at every office. West Central is the main clinical site, East 9th is the administrative and family-program hub, and South Clifton is a WIC clinic.

Vaccines, Thursday walk-ins, school shots and 2026 fees
Sedgwick County currently provides immunizations at West Central. Appointments are listed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Thursday walk-in immunization clinic runs from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. with no appointment required.
Use 316-660-7300 to confirm availability. The county warns that vaccine availability and prices can change.
Bring your current vaccination record, insurance card and any school or employer requirement that explains what you need.
For children, bring parent or guardian identification. If someone else brings the child, Sedgwick County lists a written consent letter with parent ID; guardianship papers are needed when applicable.
Uninsured children may qualify for Vaccines for Children. Adult vaccine funding may also apply. Eligibility and the amount due should be confirmed before service.
Selected current self-pay vaccine prices
The county’s 2026 fee page lists a $20 administration fee per dose unless the immunization is billed through insurance. The figures below are current listed self-pay amounts and can change.
| Service | Listed 2026 self-pay amount | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Flu vaccine | $42 per dose | Listed self-pay price includes administration fee. |
| Tdap | $75 per dose | Confirm current price and stock before visiting. |
| MMR | $128 per dose | Series or proof requirements depend on your situation. |
| Hepatitis A | $105 per dose | Travel timing and series timing may matter. |
| TB skin test | $45 | This is a screening test, not a vaccine. |
Sedgwick County WIC locations, eligibility and appointment prep
Sedgwick County WIC is a no-cost nutrition and health-support program for qualifying pregnant, breastfeeding and recently postpartum people, infants and children younger than five. Benefits may include healthy-food support, nutrition education, breastfeeding help and referrals.
1900 E. 9th St. N., Wichita, KS 67214. This location also houses several other county public-health programs.
1131 S. Clifton Ave., Suite A, Wichita, KS 67218. This location is currently listed as WIC-only.
How to start a WIC application
Ask for a WIC appointment and confirm which Wichita clinic is best for you.
Kansas WIC uses household-income rules and participant category requirements. WIC staff can tell you whether your household may qualify.
The county asks applicants to bring identification, proof of income and health information for themselves and their children.
WIC eligibility includes a health assessment to determine whether nutrition or health support is needed.
STI/HIV testing, family planning, pregnancy tests and TB care
Most of these clinical services use West Central and require an appointment. TB treatment is a key exception: screening can happen at West Central, while the treatment/control clinic is at East 9th Street.
West Central offers confidential testing and treatment for conditions including chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV/AIDS, syphilis and several other infections. Call 316-660-7300.
The Family Planning Clinic provides birth control, pregnancy testing and baseline breast/cervical cancer screening to qualifying clients. It is not a general primary-care clinic.
TB skin and blood testing for work, school or other requirements is available by appointment at West Central on specified weekdays.
TB testing versus TB treatment
| Need | Location | Current routing |
|---|---|---|
| TB skin test | West Central | By appointment; listed Monday-Wednesday 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. No Thursday skin tests. |
| TB blood test | West Central | By appointment; listed Monday-Wednesday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. |
| Positive TB test / treatment | East 9th | Call TB Clinic at 316-660-7450. Treatment clinic is appointment-only. |
Medical records and Kansas birth/death certificates use different systems
This distinction matters. Sedgwick County Health Department can help with records from services it provided, but Sedgwick County government says it has no role in issuing Kansas birth or death certificates.
For SCHD medical-record requests, email medrecordsrequest@sedgwick.gov or fax the request to 316-660-4916. The county advises calling or emailing before going to West Central for records.
Use the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Office of Vital Statistics. Kansas vital records are state records, not Sedgwick County Health Department certificates.
Kansas vital-record details that prevent wasted trips
| Question | Current Kansas answer |
|---|---|
| Who issues Kansas birth/death certificates? | Kansas Department of Health and Environment Office of Vital Statistics in Topeka. |
| Certified-copy fee | $20 for each certified copy under current KDHE guidance. |
| Walk-in processing | KDHE says around 15-20 minutes when the record can be located without difficulty. |
| Mail processing | Generally 7-10 business days depending on current request volume. |
| Who may receive a copy? | Kansas restricts certified vital records to eligible people such as the person named, qualifying family, legal representatives or people who can prove a direct interest. |
Children’s dental care and Healthy Babies support
The East 9th clinic serves eligible Sedgwick County children and qualifying pregnant patients by appointment. Services can include exams, cleanings, fluoride, sealants, basic restorative care and oral-health education.
The Healthy Babies program offers pregnancy/childbirth education, home visiting, maternal and child-health support and other family resources from the East 9th location.
Children’s Dental Clinic eligibility
For children, the county currently lists Sedgwick County residence, no dental insurance including Medicaid/KanCare dental coverage, school enrollment for school-age children, and free/reduced-price meal participation or income documentation when needed. Qualifying care is provided with no out-of-pocket cost.
Pregnant patients may qualify if they live in Sedgwick County, are enrolled in WIC or Healthy Babies, meet income rules and do not have dental insurance or Medicaid dental coverage.
Insurance, sliding-scale care and payment questions
The county contact page says Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance and self-pay based on a sliding scale are accepted for services rendered. That does not mean every insurance plan pays for every service, and individual programs can have their own billing rules.
Septic permits, restaurant inspections and birth certificates are not regular SCHD clinic services
Three common searches can send Wichita-area residents to the wrong building. Sedgwick County routes these tasks to other government agencies.
| Task | Correct authority | Practical route |
|---|---|---|
| Birth or death certificate | Kansas Office of Vital Statistics | Use KDHE Vital Statistics. Sedgwick County says county government cannot issue these certificates. |
| Septic tank / lagoon permit | Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department | Call MABCD at 316-660-1840. Wastewater permits are required where applicable. |
| Restaurant inspection report | Kansas Department of Agriculture food-safety system | Sedgwick County’s community-resource page directs users to KDA food, safety and lodging inspection reports. |
| Food or lodging complaint | Kansas Department of Agriculture | Use KDA’s appropriate complaint route unless Sedgwick County specifically directs your concern elsewhere. |
Septic and wastewater details for rural property
MABCD regulates onsite wastewater systems in unincorporated Sedgwick County and provides certain services to several smaller cities. Systems can include septic, lagoon and advanced/alternative designs.
For new construction, Sedgwick County says a wastewater permit must be obtained before MABCD will issue the building permit when an onsite system is required. Homeowners may not pull the wastewater permit themselves; a licensed wastewater installer must obtain it.
Reportable disease and after-hours public-health routing
Sedgwick County maintains a 24/7 Epidemiology Hotline at 316-660-5555 for reportable disease matters. The county also publishes DiseaseReporting@sedgwick.gov for reporting.
If a live SCHD representative is not immediately available and the matter requires urgent public-health reporting, the county points users to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment 24-hour reporting/emergencies hotline at 877-427-7317.
What to bring before visiting a Wichita SCHD clinic
Bring documents for the service you actually booked. A vaccine visit, WIC appointment, STI test and dental appointment do not use the same paperwork.
If something does not match what you expected
Use the official Hours & Locations page. Several services have moved or are intentionally limited to one Wichita site.
Most SCHD clinical services require appointments. The Thursday vaccine clinic is a notable current walk-in exception.
Ask SCHD about its medical-record process and Kansas immunization-record options rather than assuming a new vaccine is automatically required.
