Food safety

Restaurant permits, inspections and temporary food events

Wicomico Environmental Health inspects restaurants and temporary festival-style food operations. New or changing businesses should use the current Health Department application and plan-review process rather than relying on an old permit form.

New food facility: confirm plan-review and licensing requirements before construction or opening.
Temporary event: ask whether a temporary-food application and inspection are required.
Complaint: call Environmental Health with the business name, address and details of the sanitation or illness concern.
Current forms: WCHD is actively remediating application documents for accessibility, so use the newest official version available.
Septic & wells

Wicomico County septic permits, perc tests and private wells

Wicomico’s Environmental Protection Division permits and inspects on-site sewage systems and wells. Property owners may encounter the department for new systems, failing-system replacements, land evaluation, perc testing, subdivision review and well work.

Contact Environmental Health before site work

Call 410-546-4446 and describe whether the project involves new construction, a failing septic system, replacement tank, well or subdivision.

Use the current application

The department publishes separate routes for building permits, septic replacement, tank-only replacement and land evaluation.

Plan around groundwater conditions

Many land evaluations require wet-season testing because Wicomico monitors seasonal groundwater levels when determining safe separation for septic systems.

Ask about Bay Restoration Fund help

The County participates in the Bay Restoration Fund program for qualifying septic upgrades and prioritizes systems posing greater threats to waterways and drinking water.

Wet-season timing can matter Wicomico identifies roughly November through March as its typical wet season, when water tables are highest. Some perc tests and land evaluations therefore cannot be completed at any arbitrary time of year.
