St. Charles County Department of Public Health phone numbers, clinics and service routes

St. Charles County Department of Public Health serves residents across St. Charles, Wentzville, O’Fallon, Lake Saint Louis, Dardenne Prairie and surrounding communities with immunizations, health screenings, STI testing, WIC, communicable-disease services, Missouri birth and death certificates, food safety, mosquito control and other public-health programs.

A second Health Services clinic is now available in Wentzville. One important exception is septic and onsite wastewater permitting: those applications go through Community Development’s Building and Code Enforcement Division rather than Public Health.

Quick answer

What does St. Charles County Department of Public Health do?

The department protects community health through three major divisions: Health Services, Environmental Health and Protection, and Humane Services. For most residents, the highest-demand services are vaccines, clinic testing, WIC, birth/death certificates, communicable-disease help, food safety and environmental-health regulation.

Health Services

Immunizations, travel health, STI screening, TB testing, laboratory services, disease investigation, WIC and Missouri Vital Records.

Environmental Health

Restaurants, food vendors, lodging, child-care facilities, body art, pools, fitness facilities, mosquito control, waste and environmental complaints.

Humane Services

Animal control, pet adoption and animal incidents are handled by the department’s Humane Services division rather than the Health Services clinic.

Not a primary-care doctor’s office The county explicitly says it does not provide general primary-care healthcare. It does provide immunizations, screening, laboratory services and STI testing/treatment/prevention. Use a medical provider, urgent care or hospital for broader diagnosis and treatment needs.

Food safety

Restaurant permits, inspections and food complaints

St. Charles County Environmental Health and Protection licenses and inspects permanent and temporary food establishments throughout most of the county. The major jurisdiction exception is the City of St. Peters, which operates its own food-inspection program.

New restaurant

Permanent food establishments must complete county licensing and plan-review requirements before opening in the county’s jurisdiction.

Inspection reports

Inspection ratings are publicly accessible through the county’s Know the Score system, and licensed facilities must post their current inspection information.

Foodborne illness

If you believe a St. Charles County restaurant or food vendor made you sick, call Environmental Health at 636-949-1800.

St. Peters exception Do not assume St. Charles County Public Health inspects every restaurant with a St. Charles County mailing address. Food establishments inside the City of St. Peters are inspected by that city’s program.

Wrong-office prevention

Septic and OWTS permits go to Community Development

St. Charles County calls private sewage systems Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (OWTS). Permitting and inspection are handled by the Community Development Department’s Building and Code Enforcement Division, not the Department of Public Health clinic.

Permit phone

Call 636-949-7345 for OWTS permits, inspections and jurisdiction questions.

Permit address

Building and Code Enforcement is at 201 N. Second Street, Suite 412, St. Charles, MO 63301.

Jurisdiction

County permits apply in unincorporated St. Charles County and municipalities that contract with the county. Use the county permit lookup when unsure.

When an OWTS permit is required

A county permit is required for installation, alteration, expansion or repair of an onsite wastewater system, except for limited maintenance work such as cleaning filters, adjusting head pressure or replacing certain like-for-like pumps, aerators and blowers.

Confirm county jurisdiction

Use the official Permit Lookup Tool or call Building and Code Enforcement before preparing plans.

Arrange soil evaluation

System options depend on soil morphology and site conditions. Approved evaluators are used to determine feasible treatment options.

Use a qualified designer where required

Alternative systems must be designed by a Missouri-licensed professional engineer and installed by an appropriately licensed OWTS installer.

Get permits before installation

Do not install, alter or repair a regulated onsite system until you have confirmed the permit and inspection requirements.

Three-acre rule for new OWTS Current St. Charles County FAQs state that a minimum of three acres is required for installation of a new OWTS. They also state that a property must connect to a viable public sewer when one is within 200 feet.
New lagoons are not allowed St. Charles County states that it does not allow new lagoons or surfacing sewage. Many conventional and alternative subsurface systems may be possible when site and soil conditions allow.

Animal bites

Who to call after an animal bite or scratch

Animal incidents can involve both health and animal-control concerns. If someone is bitten or scratched, wash the wound with soap and water and seek appropriate medical care.

Humane Services

Report animal incidents involving humans at 636-949-7347 or through local law enforcement when appropriate.

Health Services

Communicable Disease staff can also assist with public-health guidance related to potential rabies exposure.

Do not delay medical evaluation Rabies is extremely serious once symptoms develop. A potentially exposed person should seek prompt medical advice rather than waiting to see whether the animal becomes ill.
