Los Angeles County Public Health: phone numbers, clinics and which service goes where

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is a countywide system, not one neighborhood health clinic. It runs disease-control programs, Public Health Centers, vaccine services, HIV/STI and TB programs, Environmental Health, Vital Records, substance-use prevention and treatment access, maternal-child programs and community health services.

In a county this large, the fastest route is usually to start with the service you need and your part of the county. The right location for a vaccine in the San Fernando Valley may be completely different from the right office for a birth certificate, restaurant complaint or STI test.

Quick answer

What does Los Angeles County Department of Public Health do?

LACDPH protects public health across most of Los Angeles County through communicable-disease control, immunizations, sexual-health services, tuberculosis control, public-health clinics, Environmental Health, Vital Records, maternal-child health, substance-use prevention/treatment access, emergency preparedness and population-health programs.

Direct clinic services

County Public Health Centers focus on population-health services such as immunizations, STI testing/treatment and TB evaluation rather than replacing a primary-care doctor.

Regulatory services

Environmental Health inspects restaurants, markets, pools, housing and other regulated facilities and manages permits, complaints and inspection records.

Countywide navigation

The Public Health InfoLine helps residents find the correct nearby clinic or program across Los Angeles County’s eight Service Planning Areas.

Pasadena and Long Beach are important exceptions Pasadena and Long Beach operate their own local health departments for several services. LA County Vital Records also excludes births and deaths occurring in those two cities from its current/prior-year certificate system.

Vital Records

LA County birth and death certificates: DPH vs Registrar-Recorder

Los Angeles County has a two-office system that trips people up. DPH Vital Records handles recently registered records; older records move to the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk.

DPH Vital Records

Handles births and deaths occurring in Los Angeles County, except Pasadena and Long Beach, during the current year or previous year. Certificates become available about 10 days after registration.

Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk

Handles older LA County birth/death records and other records outside the DPH current/prior-year window. Main record phone: 800-201-8999.

Certificate Current DPH fee DPH address
Birth certificate $34 per certified copy 313 N. Figueroa St., Room Lobby-1, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Death certificate $26 per certified copy 313 N. Figueroa St., Room Lobby-1, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Fetal death $23 per certified copy DPH Vital Records
Stillbirth $20 per certified copy DPH Vital Records
Check the year first

If the event is from the current or immediately previous year, DPH may have the certificate. Older records generally go to the Registrar-Recorder.

Check the city

Pasadena and Long Beach are excluded from the LA County DPH Vital Records system because those cities operate their own vital-record systems.

Choose in-person, mail or online

DPH accepts in-person and mail requests. Online ordering is handled through the department’s authorized VitalChek route and includes an additional processing charge.

Prepare identity documents

Authorized certified copies require the appropriate application, identity verification and, for mailed requests when required, notarized documentation.

TB Control Program

123 W. Manchester Blvd., Inglewood, CA 90301. Program phone: 213-745-0800.

Location matters

LA County has several WIC providers. Use the official WIC locator rather than assuming the nearest Public Health Center is a WIC clinic.

Bring program documents WIC typically needs identity, California address and income/benefit information. The exact checklist should come from the WIC agency handling your certification appointment.
Environmental Health

Restaurant inspections, complaints, housing, pools and permits

Environmental Health is one of the largest regulatory arms of LACDPH. Its main office is in Baldwin Park, and residents/businesses should use the Environmental Health system rather than calling a Public Health Center for restaurant, housing or permit problems.

Where you live matters

LA County uses eight Service Planning Areas

For vaccines and many community-health resources, Los Angeles County divides the county into eight SPAs. Knowing your area makes clinic searching much easier.

SPA 1

Antelope Valley.

SPA 2

San Fernando Valley.

SPA 3

San Gabriel Valley.

SPA 4

Metro Los Angeles.

SPA 5

West.

SPA 6

South.

SPA 7
